I wasn’t able to send out Christmas Cards this year; I love to make them myself and I just ran out of time. But I still wanted to do something for friends and family this Christmas, so I submitted an old Christmas cover song of mine to music streaming services.

Back in some younger days, I had the opportunity to perform live on Edinboro college radio as a guest on my good friend Patrick’s radio show.

I had the foresight to tune my dorm room radio to the station and click record before I headed over, and I preserved the moment in time.  However, the broadcast was quite noisy with radio interference and my recording was hard to listen to – definitely not studio quality. 

Fast forward 20+ years later and, with current technology, I was able to separate that noisy recording into three parts – guitar, vocal and (most importantly) noise! I kept the guitar and vocal, properly mixed the levels, and left the noise on the cutting room floor.  With the radio interference now removed, the quality of the studio microphones comes through and the sound quality is actually quite nice.

It’s funny how at the time all I saw were the imperfections of the performance.  Now, time and technology has allowed me the opportunity to listen again from a distance and realize – that kid wasn’t too bad.  

I wish I could sing like that today!
